The National Poverty Coalition is determined to adress all economic inequalities that exist
MISSION & HISTORY.
The National Poverty Coalition (NPC) was founded in 2008 in response to the growing economic inequalities in the United States. A group of community leaders, economists, and social activists came together to address the root causes of poverty and create a platform for long-term solutions. Recognizing that poverty is not just a lack of income, but a complex issue involving education, healthcare, housing, and employment, the NPC set out to tackle these challenges through a combination of advocacy, education, and grassroots organizing.
The NPC’s mission is to eliminate poverty and promote economic justice by advocating for policies that provide living wages, affordable housing, access to quality education, and comprehensive healthcare. The coalition’s founders believed that addressing these fundamental needs would create a more equitable society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
From its inception, the NPC set ambitious goals to reduce poverty rates and close the wealth gap in the United States. These goals include:
Advocating for a Living Wage – Pushing for federal and state minimum wage increases to ensure all workers earn enough to support themselves and their families. Affordable Housing for All – Promoting the construction of affordable housing units and supporting policies that prevent housing discrimination and displacement. Quality Education for Every Child – Working to close the education gap by supporting funding for public schools, reducing student debt, and expanding access to higher education. Universal Healthcare Access – Advocating for comprehensive healthcare coverage that includes mental health, dental, and preventive care for all individuals, regardless of income.
Economic Empowerment – Providing financial literacy programs, small business support, and job training to empower low-income families to achieve financial independence. Key Programs and Initiatives: To achieve its goals, the NPC has launched a series of impactful programs and initiatives: Project Thrive – A workforce development program that offers job training, resume building, and interview preparation for unemployed and underemployed individuals. Since its launch, Project Thrive has helped over 20,000 people find stable, well-paying jobs. The Housing for All Campaign – An initiative aimed at increasing the availability of affordable housing through policy advocacy and direct support for housing development projects. The campaign has supported the construction of 5,000 affordable housing units in cities across the country.
Economic Literacy Workshops – Free financial education classes that teach budgeting, saving, and investing skills to low-income families, helping them break the cycle of poverty. These workshops have reached over 50,000 people since the program’s inception. Healthcare for Every Family – An advocacy program that pushes for expanded healthcare access, including the expansion of Medicaid and the protection of the Affordable Care Act.
Youth Voices for Change – A youth leadership program that empowers the next generation of advocates, providing mentorship and training to young people passionate about social change. Impact and Achievements Over the past decade, the NPC has made significant strides in its mission to end poverty. Some of its key achievements include: Raising the Minimum Wage – Successfully lobbying for minimum wage increases in 15 states, impacting the lives of millions of workers. Affordable Housing Wins – Supporting the passage of legislation that provides tax credits and funding for affordable housing projects, resulting in thousands of new homes for low-income families.
